In the past weeks some of our pastors have inquired about the status in the Catholic Church of Mr. Demetrio López, a “preacher” believed to come from Chicago, Illinois, who is in the Atlanta metropolitan area to offer multiple day-long “retreat(s)” called “Aviva el Espíritu.”
After contacting the Archdiocese of Chicago, and other neighboring dioceses, we have been notified that Mr. Demetrio López is not a Catholic in good standing nor are the priests who accompany him, even if they present themselves as such. You can see the attached memo for specific information. The issue is especially concerning because the group appears to financially benefit from the goodness of attendees.
In his conferences, Mr. López promotes a Church in which the fullness of Divine Revelation was not fulfilled by the person of Jesus Christ, a Church without the need of grace bestowed by the sacraments and the full communion with the successor of the Apostle Peter.
Therefore, we ask you to let your parishioners know that these retreats are not approved by the archbishop or the Archdiocese of Atlanta. Please do not allow the promotion of these retreats at your parishes. We have included the retreat promotion so you can see what it looks like.

En las últimas semanas, algunos de nuestros párrocos han preguntado sobre el estatus en la Iglesia Católica del Sr. Demetrio López, un “predicador” que se cree proviene de Chicago, IL, y que viene al área metropolitana de Atlanta a impartir un(os) “retiro(s)” de varios días llamado(s) “Aviva el Espíritu”.
Después de contactar a la Arquidiócesis de Chicago, y a otras diócesis vecinas, se nos ha notificado que el Sr. Demetrio López no está afiliado a ningún movimiento dentro de la Iglesia Católica y los sacerdotes que lo acompañan no tienen facultades ministeriales. Todo lo que hace y promueve lo hace a título personal, aunque se presente como lo contario. Pueden consultar la traducción adjunta del memorando para obtener información específica. El problema resulta especialmente preocupante, ya que el grupo parece beneficiarse económicamente de la buena voluntad de los asistentes.
En sus pláticas, el Sr. López promueve una Iglesia en la cual la persona de Jesucristo no completa la totalidad de la Revelación Divina, una Iglesia sin la necesidad de la gracia de los sacramentos y de la comunión plena con el sucesor del Apóstol Pedro.
Así pues, pido que comuniquen a la feligresía que estos retiros no están aprobados por el arzobispo ni por la Arquidiócesis de Atlanta. Por favor no autoricen la promoción de estos eventos en sus parroquias. Hemos incluido la promoción del retiro para que puedan ver cómo es.
